ABOUT US

Hello! We are the Sherry family.
We have owned Wahroonga a 9900 ha property in the Clarke Creek  district since 2007, we established Wahroonga Belmont Reds in 2016. We come from a commercial background and run our registered breeding stock on the same principals.
Our enterprise is family orientated with all members involved in the stock handling, breeding decisions, recording of data and sale preparation of bulls.
Our breeding philosophy is  to breed a low maintenance animal free of chemical treatments. Females have to produce a weaner every year that is a high yielding moderate framed  body with high meat quality.

WHY BELMONT REDS?

The Belmont Reds breed is unique to Australia. Evolving from CSIRO trials conducted at the Belmont National cattle breeding Rockhampton in 1954, using imported Afrikander bulls with the polled Shorthorn and Hereford herds that were present  at the time. The  Afrikander genes make them heat-tolerant, resistant to external and internal parasites and give them increased foraging ability. Add to this their meat quality and yield, both of which come from their Bos Taurus genes (Shorthorn and Hereford). High fertility is another characteristic of this breed, well-noted in many research projects and CRC trials. With markets shifting to a value-based system, we are convinced that Belmont Reds are ideally suited to any Australian beef breeding enterprise.

BELMONT REDS AND NORTHERN AUSTRALIA

The Belmont Red was specifically created for Queensland's tropical climate and environment. The breed you see today is the result of a highly successful CSIRO crossbreeding programme carried out more than 50 years ago in the Rockhampton area. The programme involved combining the genes of African and British cattle to create a stabilised animal that has the tropical adaptation of the African breed, together with the high fertility and top carcass quality of the British line.

Belmont Reds are renowned as particularly hardy cattle. They have maximum resistance to parasites, disease, heat and drought - and all of these highly desirable traits are heritable.

The breed is also renowned for early puberty and rapid maturity, with fertility and re-breed rates being well-documented.

And the progeny of the Belmont Red typically have a high-yielding carcass with meat of consistently good quality. This means Belmont Red beef will always find a ready market.

WHY CHOOSE BELMONT RED SIRES?

The Belmont Red is very well suited for any Australian breeding program. As a Bos Taurus, the crossbreed’s high levels of tick and parasite resistance, high fertility and meat quality are an ideal combination with the animal’s adaptation to the harsh conditions of northern Australia.

When combined with a high Bos Indicus herd, they achieve 100% hybrid vigour, without losing their excellent adaptation to the Australian environment. When put over a soft line of cows, you retain the softness while adding tick and parasite resistance along with heat tolerance. As a Bos Taurus, they can enhance MSA specifications in any Northern Australian enterprise.

BELMONT RED SIRES AND PROFITABILITY

One of the best reasons for opting for a Belmont Red sire comes down to profitability. Fertility is the main driver of a profitable beef enterprise. Being able to wean a calf every year is key, and in doing so, costs need to be kept to a minimum. Fertility, resistance and adaptation – these three traits are synonymous with the breed and with profit.
